Golf Alliance NewsArnold Palmer Center for Golf History Opens at USGAWith a view toward the vast potential of the game's future developments and a healthy respect for the traditions of a revered past, the USGA Museum entered a new chapter of its lengthy history when the doors to the Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History opened on June 3, 2008. Golf CollectiblesGolf Sheet Music CoversFrom the late 19th century through the 1930s, sales of sheet music were as important to the music industry as the sale of CDs is today. As seen in the promotion of many items, the sophisticated image of golf was used as a tool to sell the product. Dozens of sheet music covers were decorated with golf scenes, even though the songs themselves may be unrelated to golf. Dean Martin's That's Amore from The Caddy, contain lyrics unrelated to golf. However, sometimes the music is a golfing song, such as Bing Crosby's Straight Down the Middle.
Hickory HighlightsThe 2008 National Hickory ChampionshipThe National Hickory Championship (NHC) was established in 1998 to bring together golfers who enjoy playing golf in historic conditions, the way it was played before the turn of the century. Open to everyone, the Championships draws passionate and accomplished wood shaft golfers from across the United States and Canada.
In The MuseumsWorld Golf Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2008 InducteesCarol Semple Thompson, a seven-time winner of USGA championships, will be recognized alongside posthumous inductees Denny Shute, Craig Wood and golf writer Herbert Warren Wind as part of the 2008 Class at this year's World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, it was announced on June 24, 2008 at Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn., site of the 2008 United States Women's Open. Shute, Thompson, Wind and Wood will be inducted alongside golf course architect Pete Dye and one other inductee who will be announced later this summer. The Auction BlockPBA Galleries Golf Book Auction on August 14On August 14, 2008, PBA Galleries, Auctioneers, Rare Books & Manuscripts in San Francisco will be offering golf books and memorabilia from the collection of Charles C. Ratigan of Wisconsin, two private libraries, and other owners.
